A young Scarlett Rainsford banished in Greece 10 years ago while she was on holidays with her family, and now they have found her living in Briarstone, England.
DCI Louisa Smith has been reassigned into the old case of the missing young girl Scarlett Rainsford, she was never sure of the investigation, the parents didn't really show interest in the case and the Greece police didn't help very much with the investigation.
Will the english police close this cold case 10 years after and know the truth about the banishing or will Scarlett keep silence about all these years?

"Sometimes you make mistakes. And if you don't own up to them, sooner or later they turn into bigger mistakes and bigger ones, and then you can't admit to them at all, ever."

I have been a follower of Elizabeth Haynes since her first book "Into the darkest corner", so since the beginning I knew that this wouldn't be a light book, but rather painful and realistic. But I like how the writer transmits all the pain, the loneliness and the fear to the reader. It stings to the reader how life treated Scarlett and how is not easy to have a clear opinion of her. She had a very difficult life since she was a child, then the kidnapping, being a sex slave and the return at a home without the love of the parents... Would you pity her or understand her? This is a difficult question to answer...
It was a page turner book since the beginning, but sometimes it was difficult following the plot with the reports in the middle of the chapters and so many characters to follow.
I would highly recommend this book, but you have to know that none of the Elizabeth Haynes books will make you impassible, the character will remain with you for a long time.
How many secrets do you keep behind closed doors?
